It is Fraud Awareness Week and at Forums International we are proud to support the ACFE. Now is a good time to keep your staff and teams informed for the numerous types of frauds that can hit businesses and individuals.

No matter how strong your technical defences are, if you do not train your staff then they will always end up as the weakest link. I have always been a strong advocate for engaging with teams to keep them informed of risks and to also obtain feedback on what they are experiencing on the ground.

It can be a challenge to get engagement, some of the stats and figures out there are so massive that you can easily become numb to it all. Figures such as the overall cost to the economy can simply fly over your head and it can be hard to get a feeling of how the issues can apply to us as individuals at home and at work. When running awareness workshops, I always give real world examples of issues such as phishing, authorised push payment fraud, and identity theft. Giving demonstrations as to how criminals are operating tends to work well in grabbing attention and stimulating debate and discussion.

Another champion of this approach is Jenny Radcliffe, check out this excellent video and interview with her from LADbible:

Keeping Up with Change

We are currently in a period of rapid change, at the last Fraud Prevention Network forum meeting we explored the many consultations, some open and some recently closed, that could have an impact upon our abilities to identify and prevent fraud or that could change the shape of fraud in the future. A few examples:

  • The Bank of England recently held a consultation for the exploration of a UK Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), and we can expect further consultations in 2022.
  • Many jurisdictions are examining how Digital Identities could work and this will impact upon how we conduct due diligence and identity verification, also how authentication may work for services.
  • Now that the UK has left the EU, there are consultations for the potential evolution of GDPR and possible amendments to AML regulations. The EU are also making reforms to their approach for AML.

With so much going on it can be hard to keep up and so we have decided to produce a fraud newsletter which will be circulated to the members of the Fraud Prevention Network Our intention is to help you keep track of consultations and to report upon current incident and trends. The first edition will coincide with the next forum meeting which will take place on 7 Dec 2021.

During this meeting we will also be joined by some representatives from Companies House which will give us an opportunity to better understand their direction as they continue their journey of reforms.

If you would like to join us at the Fraud Prevention Forum then prospective members can try out their first meeting at no cost, head over to our event page to register, meetings are listed below. If you need any help or guidance on any of the topics raised here, then get in touch and we will explore how we can best provide assistance.
